[Intuitive Strength Weekly] Do you really need a gym to get strong?

Hey Reader,

Let’s get into this week:

The Warm Up

This work week was insane. I finally got my first workout in yesterday (Wednesday) — and sometimes it be like that. I missed two workouts earlier in the week after getting stuck in front of a computer for a week and a half straight. I eased into yesterday's session, and it felt so good to move my body again. Picking up where you left off counts as a win.

This Week's Lift: Home vs. Gym Workouts

One of the most common questions I get from women starting Thrive Coaching is: "Do I need a gym membership for this to work?"

Short answer: No.

Longer answer: it depends on what you're optimizing for — but strength gains, consistency, and confidence? You can build all three at home just as effectively as you can in a gym.

Here's how to think about it.

The variable that actually matters: progressive overload

Your body doesn't know or care whether you're lifting a barbell or a set of adjustable dumbbells in your living room. What it responds to is progressive overload — gradually increasing the challenge over time.

Where gyms do have an edge

To be fair, gyms give you:

  • More weight range as you get stronger (useful long-term)
  • Machines that make certain movements easier to learn
  • A dedicated "workout space" that can help some people get in the headspace to train

Where home training wins

  • Zero commute time — huge for consistency, especially on busy weeks
  • No waiting for equipment, no gym-intimidation factor
  • Easier to fit in short, frequent sessions
  • All you really need: a set of resistance bands or adjustable dumbbells, and a bit of floor space

The real deciding factor

Consistency beats "optimal" almost every time. A home workout you actually do 3x a week will out-perform a "perfect" gym program you skip half the time.

That's exactly why Thrive Coaching gives you both options for every single workout — so wherever you are, whatever your week looks like, you always have a way to show up for yourself.

Coach's Notebook

When I'm at the gym, I do a lot of observing — mostly because I zone out between sets and someone wanders into my line of sight. I've noticed several gym members squeezing in cardio between lifts: running laps, jumping rope, knocking out burpees.

When strength training, I usually advise against this. It tends to eat into your performance on the lift itself. Your rest periods are part of the workout — they let your muscles recover so you can go hard on the next set. If you want to burn extra calories, save the cardio for the end of your workout or a separate day, so you can maximize both strength and hypertrophy (muscle growth).

One Small Action

Where are you most consistent with your workouts — at home or at the gym? Let's build a plan around that.

When you lift, you're not just burning energy in the...
