I used to spend 2+ hours a day on cardio. I was wrong.

Hey Reader,

Back in college, I used to spend 2+ hours in the gym almost every day. My only goal: burn as many calories as possible. Endless cardio, session after session, chasing a number on a machine screen

I never got the body I actually wanted.

What did? Strength training. Let me explain why it works when everything else feels like spinning your wheels — especially once you're past 30.

Cardio burns calories. Strength training builds you.

When you lift, you're not just burning energy in the moment — you're building muscle tissue that sticks around, raises your resting metabolism, and reshapes your body from the inside out. All those hours on the elliptical and treadmill never gave me that.

“Just doing more" stops working after 30 (and honestly doesn’t work that well in your 20s either…).

In your 20s, you can often out-cardio or out-diet a plateau. Your body still bounces back. I was able to lose weight with this strategy in my 20s, but I paid the price for it. Hello, brain fog, amplified cravings, and poor sleep.

After 30, your metabolism naturally slows, hormone shifts make fat loss harder to force through sheer effort, and "more cardio, less food" starts costing you the one thing you actually need: muscle. Push harder with more cardio and less food, and your body doesn't reward you — it just burns through muscle for fuel, leaving you softer and more worn out, not more transformed.

"Toned" is a myth without muscle.

The lean, strong look most women want isn't a special kind of muscle — it's regular muscle, visible because body fat is lower. Cardio and dieting alone skip the part that actually creates the look. I lost weight in my 20s, but I had almost no muscle definition with this extreme cardio method…

It's the antidote to muscle loss.

After 30, you lose muscle every year by default unless you actively build and maintain it. Strength training is how you fight back — for how you look now and how you move at 60, 70, 80.

It lets you eat more, not less.

More muscle = higher metabolism = more fuel without the guilt spiral I used to live in after those long cardio sessions.

It's the only method where progress compounds instead of resets.

A new PR, an extra rep, a heavier set — every session adds to the last one. Compare that to hours of cardio, which usually just brings you back to square one the next day.

This is the whole philosophy behind Thrive Coaching's 3x/week strength plan. Not a quick fix — the actual mechanism behind real, lasting change. I wish someone had told college-me this years earlier.
